Fixing Common Problems

I keep getting errors when trying to retrieve my email
First, just wait for 10 minutes or so, then try again. Certain kinds of network problems can temporarily glitch the process of fetching messages from your POP mail server, or the Death2Spam server might simply be re-starting after a software upgrade. If the D2S server repeatedly sends your email program an error message, and seems to be "stuck" somehow, try reverting your email program's configuration settings to point directly at your POP Mail Server. If the problem persists, contact your ISP -- their POP server has a problem. On the other hand, if you're now able to retrieve your email, please let us know about this situation immediately! You may have discovered a bug in the D2S server (they're rare, but they can happen). And don't worry, you won't "lose" any messages if the mail servers aren't responding correctly or get stuck.

After setting up my email program for D2S, I can't send messages!
There are two ways your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can authenticate your access privileges for an SMTP (outgoing mail) service:
   (i) you first log in to a POP server and collect your mail;
(ii) you logon directly to the SMTP server using an ID and password.

The first option is referred to as "SMTP authentication by prior POP logon". The second option should (ideally) utilize the same account ID and password as for POP access. Most email programs allow you to configure SMTP authentication, i.e. select one of the above options. If you're unable to send mail, you should configure your email reader to perform an SMTP logon when sending mail (option #2 above). Your SMTP service shouldn't care how you are authenticated, so long as you logon correctly when trying to send a message. Note that SMTP is a separate Internet Mail service, which actually has nothing to do with your POP (Post Office Protocol) service.

Your Internet Service Provider may require that your email program sends a username and password before you are allowed to send email ("SMTP Authentication"). In this case, to send emails when Eudora has been configured to retrieve through D2S, follow these instructions for SMTP Relaying.

Spam filtering is working, but no messages show up on the website
The Death2Spam service is hosted on a number of servers in various locations around the world, to improve your access time when retrieving mail. It's very easy to mis-type a URL in your browser, such that you're actually viewing the D2S web application on the "wrong" server. Make sure that the server you're using to retrieve filtered email is the same as the one you're looking at in your web browser.

My email program keeps downloading the same messages
This is usually because your email program has been configured to leave a copy of messages on your mail (POP) server, and/or it hasn't been setup to only download "unread" messages. This is easily fixed:

In Outlook Express:

  • Go to the Tools menu and select Accounts.
  • In the accounts box, select your mail account (click the Mail tab first).
  • Once you've highlighted the right account, click Properties from the controls list on the right.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • In the Delivery section, make sure the 'Leave a copy of message on server' checkbox is not ticked.
  • Click the OK button.

A large message is jammed, and I can't retrieve any email
Internet email wasn't designed to send very large files. If someone sends you a large file, you may not be able to download it due to the connection timing out. If this happens, retrieve the large message by accessing your mail account directly (instead of connecting through D2S). Download and delete the message from your POP server. You will then be able to download the rest of your mail through D2S as normal.

How do I get Norton Antivirus working with D2S?

  • Disable your Norton Anti-Virus software (via the "email scanning" option).
  • Write down your existing User/Account Name and Incoming mail server (POP3) settings, in case you ever need to revert to your current configuration.
  • In the User Name field, add a colon ':' character to the end of your User/Account Name, then add your Incoming mail server information.
  • Change your Incoming mail server (POP3) settings to "pop-proxy.death2spam.net".
  • Re-enable the Norton anti-virus program.

I can't find any way to "opt out" or close my D2S account
Once you've re-configured your client email program to point back at your ISP's mail (POP) server, there's nothing else you need do. As soon as you reset your email program, it won't collect any more messages through the D2S proxy. After a month's inactivity, your account will be "retired" and any remaining "ghosted" emails will be deleted.

How do you prevent D2S from continuing to use your connection information, or accessing your email account? We don't keep records of anyone's password. Each time your email program connects to the D2S proxy, it supplies the authentication information required to collect your mail. These details are not stored in D2S's database. The proxy server only ever accesses your email account when you're retrieving mail.
